(somehow this topic comes up once in every 1 year
or so on almost all
mailing lists that dont munge reply-to)
If the argument is solely that private messages *may*
get on the list, then I think that it's plain bs.. The
current settings:
a)take getting used to as they are not the norm across
mailing lists all over the Internet, be it Mailman,
egroups or whatever..
b)Using default reply to all ensures that 2+ copies of
the email (sender, list and cc:s as in the case of
this email) are sent for every email.. which in the
end adds up as useless email traffic. Mailman has a
setting to prevent duplicate emails from arriving in
your mailbox for this reason, but it seems to be
turned off by default. Moreover, a few members seem to
be sending emails to both addresses of the list, which
will compound things even further. This is besides the
fact that it is more work overall..
c)The last couple of times I'd asked questions on this
list, I was wondering why a coupla people were
replying to me in private. Now I guess I know why :)
d)Private messages are sent very rarely, and thus ease
of use far outweighs the problem of hastily sent
private emails. Imagine the case where members of this
list who are used to sending private messages join
another list, which is very likely to be un-munged..

reporter's contact details.
