My dear chap, what's the difference between a RH user who can't manage
without redhat-config-* and a debian user who is all at sea without
eximconfig, modconf etc, and when asked to compile code, at once asks
"is there a debian package for it?"
I agree with you. I have never used either eximconfig or modconf. And our
servers, my workstation at office and my home pc are running woody/sarge. I
refrain from compiling the source whenever possible, not because it is easier
to install a package, but because apt is too good.
FYI, some months back, all our servers were running some version of RedHat
Linux for years. There was not a single other distro in the company. I am
not a long time debian user. Compared with RedHat/Mandrake and the like
Debian has painful installation and configuration.
We are switching from RH to debian in our office. RedHat is as stable and
secure as you configure it. We have had superb redhat servers with uptimes
of several months.
We switch to debian because its fast and free. We have tried fedora but
werent satisfied. RedHat has abstracted a lot. When I am running RedHat I
have a strange feeling that I am not in control (no flames pls).
I have been using Linux for 4 years. I have used only RedHat for 3 years
though I have known about and tried to install debian. Debian is worth the
pain. Use it to beleive it.
