That's true. MKS did a great role for bringing up the number of
GNU/Linux users in MIT.
One reason for MKS' success there was, he was not just giving lecutres
on Free Software. He was actually trying to educate people on
Internet(the technologies, protocols, uses, etc.) in a down to earth
fashion and while doing so, he was obviously using Free Software. Of
course, he was talking about Free Software a lot. But that was not
disjointed.
It is almost three years since MKS left MIT. Even now MKS is the role
model for a lot of people in MIT and passed out from MIT (like me ;-).
This is what I think happened in MIT. Others may know better. If so,
please correct me.
Apart from this we had a lot of support from AU-KBC research center in
terms of providing the students the latest version of popular distros.
Prasanna David (was System Admin at that time) gave a good support too
by making the distro CDs available to the student. Suraj also did a
significant role in inspiring students to use GNU/Linux (especially
emacs for the quoting of replies that he uses for mails ;-) Venkatesh,
who is also at AU-KBC did a wonderful job in encouraging students to
take up open source projects. Anyway, AU-KBC played a vital role in
bringing up GNU/Linux users @ MIT.
I think, this model is better when it comes to educate people
(especially students). This kind of "motivation of knowledge" will any
time attract any kind of student. In CEG also, you(and your friends)
can try to motivate/educate others in this way.
But one thing is that I don't find any of the current MITians actively
participate in ILUGC discussions. May be due to their study load. Hope
more MITians will join the thread ;-)
