Conditional dependencies are possible only with a ports based system.
If a app supports gnome and ncurses frontend for eg., you could get
all 3 possibilties with gentoo (using USE flags but same package),
where in debian you may need 3 seperate .debs
Simply put--apt is too old and welcome to portage.

Hi!
Interested in knowing the distinctive advantages of
gentoo say over debian on which it is based.
Gentoo is based on FreeBSD ports.
What is this hype over portage?
Easy upgrades, optimizing system to the needs of the
developer, and handling of dependencies, to name a
few.
Any users out there?
Yeah :)
