I dabbled with FreeNAS circa mid 2013 (don't recall version number).
The Web UI is very nice and the console (CLI) is a curses based
utility. It has a shell option for full root access.
My client site had a power glitch. After reboot the zpool storage
disappeared! The client decided to stick with a Linux based home
grown NAS solution.
The client was in the animation/vfx domain so the hardware was
industry standard (not some cheap desktop with attached SATA disks).
Things may have changed a lot since 2013. I would suggest lurking in
the FreeNAS mailing lists and web fora for more grass root level
knowledge.
Suggest you use the best Host Bus Adapter, HDDs, NICs, PSU with UPS
backup that your budget allows.
You can also look into open-e (based on Linux kernel but commercial).
