Currently a whole lot better than the US/EU. Both wrt. copyright and
patents. But the key word is currently. I remember reading that in 
2005 India is set to enter into some WTO agreement which would require
implementing the same ridiculous and draconian laws that the US 
pioneered.

reading about some company trying to patent basmati and other
traditional Indian products. Does anyone have any info on India's legal
situation regarding patents?

Basically the EU is going to legalize software patents with no
restrictions on what is patentable.
