No, I already installed all the zlib and perl compression libraries via the
ubuntu repository before installing via cpan repository.  But none seems to
be working.


Seems like you had spent time online, checking for such issues and possible
solutions. Then you might have also come across this[1] which clarifies
whats the issue with perl/zlib. And this[2].
