The latest stable release of Debian is 3.0 which has only kernel 2.4 and
not kernel 2.6.
To get your hands dirt with kernel 2.6, you can go for 'sarge' (code
name for next release) or 'sid'. You can go to debian.org to find the
difference between these two.

FYI, I think current snapshot of sid or sarge comes around 14 cds.
