Got this from my mon, who works for Canara bank:
Apparently they are dumping an accounting package contract
from infosys running on M$ and going for an in-house package
on linux. Reason? Simple: massive cost saving.
"User-friendliness"? Not an issue at all, since users will
run just the one program and probably don't even know what
OS its running on.
Retraining? I'd guess about a week, or even less if the
interfaces are similar.
In spite of all the FUD from M$ about TCO, cost conscious
companies can clearly see the bottom line and choose the
cheapest alternative.
Canara bank are really big, in terms of both turnover
and employees.
I think the trickle is starting to turn into an avalanche
now.
The server market is already in the bag, the enterprise
desktop market is being won and can be considered to be just
a matter of time. It is the home desktop market in which
the ugliest, hardest and most prolonged battle will be fought.
The battle lines are drawn. Ladies and gentlemen, fasten
your seatbelts!
