Dennis, I've certainly knocked 7Q10 flow-setting in the southeastern USA:
Vadas, R.L. Jr., and D.L. Weigmann. 1993. The concept of instream flow and its
relevance to drought management in the James River basin. Virginia Water
Resources Research Center Bulletin 178: 78 pp.
I've also given ecohydrologic talks in several public venues here in the Oly.
area, including for the local Trout Unlimited chapter, Oly. Sci. Brews
(sponsored by the WA St. Teachers Assoc.), & Oly. Sci. Café (sponsored by a
local univ., but it's a natl. program). We can't just be preaching to the choir
to get meaningful change.

Subject: IFC_mail: Re: Topic 2 questions - Mississippi
Since we hardly use any surface water and our biologists don't sample streams,
I think instream flow is viewed as something we don't need to be concerned
about. However, excessive groundwater use in the intensive agriculture region
in western MS has lead to ground water declines. Now we have voluntary water
well metering, tailwater recovery and water conservation measures. Basically we
have lots of streams in this area that are impacted by low flow.

Well it appears Bob Vadas gets credit for exposing one of the perils of a
too-busy retirement pace. It seems I just never pulled the trigger on Topic
#2. But the good news is, it's here now and ready for your collective wisdom
and insights. Please accept my apologies for this oversight. I'm sure it'll
never happen again.
Attached is the second in what may be a number of topics for IFC members to
comment on. Topic #1 was a great success by stirring lots of interaction so I
encourage you all to stay engaged in this exercises. Remember we're an
organization of members helping members so I encourage you all to at least look
this brief information over (soon) and participate in any exchanges that follow.
I know just how busy you all are so please don't look at this as an assignment.
It's more of an opportunity to improve your understanding and ability to
manage water in rivers, streams and standing waters.
It's been several months since the first of these topics came out but the delay
was due to several factors. I'll try to turn these out on a more regular
(monthly?) basis. As always if you have any questions or comments, please let
me know and remember, we'll have time at the biennial meeting to discuss this
project in more detail. Thanks again for your participation and good luck with
this topic.
Tom
