While I admit, that made me smile to read, it paints a dour portrait and
future. And there are many who have recognized this through time. But even
if true, a few souls have to push against the notion (almost a shrug of
acquiescence) that humanity is made that way. Water is a shared necessity
to life here, we are fortunate in a way to be working in such a
fundamentally vital arena. Our careers are based on the premise that we can
do better, and when we do, others can see it and change too.
Or maybe I'd like to think so . . .

Long ago, Hutchinson (1958, p. 426) asserted that having babies is now
"likely fostered by those business interests which seem to believe that an
indefinitely expanding economy is possible on a non-expanding planet". And
Clegg and Hall (2019, p. xvii) had this to say:
"Man is a greedy breed of stupid and arrogant roots. Studies and science,
though debatable, are used to justify or un-justify our ever-growing
appetite for unstoppable growth and development. But now we choose to fail,
we choose to destroy - we ignore the obvious common sense of evidence and
proceed forth willingly. We all know in our heart of hearts that our path

editing a book re: ecologic problems resulting from climate change &
human-population growth, including a chapter (soon to be submitted) from the
'Professional Ethics & Advocacy' session of the '19 AFS/TWS conf. in Reno.

Thx Ian. Here in WA, we keep trying to fig. out how to accommodate
human-population growth, regardless of political bent (e.g., past water
reservations for ag & other businesses and the new Hirst decision for
domestic-water use). And now we're the epicenter of Coronovirus in the USA.
Lately, I've been thinking about the importance of social inequities for
causing pollution, e.g., the growing homeless population in Seattle is
overloading Puget Sound w/ raw sewage, which threatens to undo what
water-quality progress has been made:

Unfortunately, many local policies implicitly promote market-rate over
lower-income housing, thus worsening the problem. In CA, there's a big
problem of illegal MJ farms that's impacting instream flows. Ultimately,
social & ecologic well-being are tied tog. Like climate change, some will
consider this a "political" issue, but really, it's about finding a healthy
balance so that everyone can pursue happiness (including lotic fishes).

I also think this is an important topic, for if true (and very likely it
is), then we really should be thinking strategically about what should be,
can be, done about it. Although it is often thought of as separate and on a
different scale from climate change, degradation and loss of landscapes and
their related aquatic systems is also occurring globally, perhaps
irretrievably (e.g., prairie and prairie wetlands and streams in Midwest),
and is occurring through application of the same paradigm - consider
socio-economics first and foremost, short term vs long term thinking,
intergenerational inequity, etc..

In catching up on old e-mails, Jacob's concern re: how much public input to
heed relative to the importance for sound sci. is a key topic that I've been
thinking a lot about during the last 5 yrs. (including 2 AFS presentations
in the western USA, i.e., Portland & Reno). Here in WA, we've been taught to
balance these concerns for instream-flow setting, although things haven't
always favored F&W resources that way. Reminds me of past Entiat R.
(mid-Columbia) negotiations, where closed-door session(s) kept aquatic
ecologists like me from full participation (i.e., interagency politics) re:
agricultural-water reservations taking precedence over instream-flow
setting. I don't think that much has changed recently.

number of high quality educational materials and held 4 international
workshops to help enhance our members' ability to manage streams and lakes
for fish and wildlife. The lessons in these exercises are as relevant today
as when they were created, but as is often the case, our busy workload
sometimes leads us away from these resources. So to keep these documents
alive and increase member networking, ExCom has endorsed a project to
revisit some of the policies and strategies that we've developed over the
years. With a little luck (and memory), we'll send out a short set of
information for you to consider on a monthly basis. The attached Overview
provides more details about the project, and Topic #1 is the first set of
policies and strategies for you to check out.
I know you're all busy and really don't need one more thing to do, but ExCom
is convinced that this project is valuable to our members and I encourage
you to check this out and share your feedback.
