is the checking done prior to the file being opened... or is it a manual thing
that relies on steadfast competent engineers looking for that lock file before
they do anything else?

Hi,
Using skill we get around this by creating a allegro.lock file. When we
open the database,
we check for this file (if it's found the design is opened in a temp
directory).
We use the lock feature to lock archived designs, this stops the
archived design
being accidently worked on.

Well, that works for concept also.
I don't know how many times I have had to leave the
schematic so the engineer could make "the final change".
