[PCB_FORUM] Re: Change Circle Diameter

I use AutoCAD for documentation... I was looking at the change Circle diameter
issue as a way to modify cline arcs and circles. The parametric parameters I
mentioned way down in the post below are also referenced to etch layers, not
drawing documentation.

Well... I think what you want from the ECAD tool depends a lot on your
working environment (and those who establish it).

If your company's goal is to have all the documentation in the ECAD
environment (as mine is), then you need the basic CAD functions. For now, I
go off into Microstation (licensed via VeriBest98) to do anything of a
drafting or mechanical nature, then import it back into Allegro to satisfy
this requirement without going insane.

Have a smurfy day,
-Chris

I agree with this thought. All I want from the pcb tools are good
interfaces to graphic systems (dxf, idf, etc). Waste of time and resources
to have all that stuff inside the tool.

Well.......

Personally, I'd rather they spend more time on the ECAD side and leave the
MCAD side to the mechanical packages.

They will never get Allegro to have all the features of a half-decent
mechanical package, and trying to removes resources from more important
things.

<OPINION>
There are some on this forum (not pointing any fingers, just a general
statement) that think Cadence is going to hire bunches of programmers to
put
every feature in that some other system has. Ain't gonna happen, folks.
They make MUCH more money on the IC stuff and are going to spend
development
dollars accordingly. Like it or not, board-level layout is small potatoes
to them. We need to focus on things that are going to make PCB design
easier (like the new DFA stuff coming out in 15.5) and quit giving Cadence
excuses to put real features off so they can do the minor things to help
them compete against Protel. :)

Now, if they would just make a translator so we can use the same DFA
constraints in Valor and in Allegro. I would like to use the DFA stuff,
but
our MfgEngs are NOT going to maintain TWO sets of constraints, and we sure
as heck can't afford to hire somebody to do it...

I seem to remember Cadence some years back talking up how they were going
to
add dimensioning and make it all good and stuff. That kinda happened, like
half way, and then they stopped after the first round.
I guess the "more important" stuff got in the way (specctra).
Cadence, are you listening? Please start working on the "mechanical" side
of
allegro again.

Thanks for your time,
Kevin

This was
one of my biggest gripes with Mentor Graphics tools... They simply did not
support real word Geometries... IE circles, rectangles and the like.

did do exactly this... and that was a cheap little $900 tool then... and it
did DXF in and out too. Was a heavy hitter for RF design when used
with AutoCAD. Later I did work with HP ADS and sure
enough... parametric
editing. Course you wouldn't even try to layout a motherboard with it.

Gosh, what a concept.
