Not irrelevant but possibly superfluous - it just indicates that what 
follows is hexadecimal. It may or may not be required depending on 
what interface you are talking about. I could have given the filetype 
as 2686.

Fwiw my MimeMap entry is:

application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document 
MSWordX a7e .docx
