The system files are indeed stored on the flash disk, and the new system updater reflashes your unit, yes. It is supposed to back up and restore, so technically, neither the flash disk or the hard drive should be affected by doing an update. But yes, if there are issues, it would very likely affect the flash disk, not the hard drive. However, the flash disk contains lots of things, your media player play lists and catalog (hence the reason Tamara saw no music even though it was still there). It also stores the subscription list for RSS feeds, and those settings (this is why she saw the default feeds rather than her personalized list). It also stores all your email, appointments, contacts, settings, quick recordings, journal entries, and a few other things. So losing what's there can be a really big deal. That's why it is always a good idea to do, as she did, and create a backup before updating. And you should definitely do a backup before reflashing your unit, as when you do it manually, there is no automatic backup and restore.

I was wondering, when it comes to the data loss as far as updates are concerned, is the Linux kernel for the device stored in flash? I always felt that the update would just affect flash memory and not the hard drive.

Okay, you didn't lose all your data. Looks like you just reflashed your unit. Did you press any other keys when you did the reset? Either way, if you've added nothing since updating to 1.1, restore your latest backup and you should be good to go.

You might have to redownload some podcasts and articles in RSS, depending on what you had compared to the default feeds, how the databases match, etc, due to the fact that RSS now cleans up after you, and matches what's on the hard drive to the RSS database. But otherwise, everything should be restored to normal.
