[icon-discuss] Re: My first experience with file sharing

Thanks, Pratik. That makes sense. I wonder if the problem is that my wife
and I decided we wanted to share every folder in our name folders with each
other. So, with the help of Microsoft, we set it up so that my wife could
see every folder under Paul Henrichsen from her computer and I could see
every folder under Vonnie from my computer.
If I type "//PAUL/music" or "//PAUL/documents" I get an error.
But if I type "//PAUL/Paul Henrichsen" I connect and see every folder under
my name including hidden folders.
As you can see, I was as creative in naming my computer as you were<grin>.
I don't really mind all the folders. At least I can get to the ones I need
to copy something from.
Thanks for your help and that of everyone else who stuck with me through
this.

Paul,

Peer-to-peer file sharing works in such a way whare you're not required to
set up the folder hierarchy in the path name. All computers in a particular
workgroup, given certain secutiry constraints, are able to see folders that
are specifically shared.

In my case, for example, my work group is named "ppatel"--Yes quite
creative, I know! All of my computers (including the Icon) are in that
workgroup. Each computer is uniquely named. In my case I have two
desktops, two laptops, and now the Icon as sharing computers. My first
Desktop is my main unit with all my music stored on it and is named
"ppatel2." I have several folders shared on this computer. Specifically,
my music folder, which is technically located in "c:\documents and
settings\ppatel\my documents\my music," has a share name of "music." When I
go to my Icon to access the music share that is located on the computer
named "ppatel2," I type in the following path "//ppatel2/music" without the
ending slash.

The folder above it in the hierarchy the "my documents" folder is also
shared with a share name of "documents." To access that share, I type the
path "//ppatel2/documents." To access my music folder I do not have to go
through the hierarchy like "//ppatel2/documents/music" since it is a
separate share in an of itself. When it comes to network objects, the
shared objects appear on the first level of the hierarchy. You can dig
deeper by browsing through the shares.

I hope this clarifies a bit. Please let me know if I can answer any
questions.

Regards,

Pratik

Hi, Rob. Okay. Someone told me I needed to include the slash after the share
name such as "music/".
When I tried what you suggested, I was told it was an invalid share name.
If my music folder is under the "Paul Henrichsen" folder, wouldn't I have to
specify that?
So, wouldn't the line be: "//PAUL/Paul Henrichsen/music"?
If not, could you please explain?
When I tried that as well, I still get the invalid share name error.
What I have done is to share such folders under the paul Henrichsen folder
as: Music, documents, my files, and downloads.
In this way, if there is a file that my wife wants, she can go get it. Also,
if there is something she has downloaded, such as a program we have
purchased over the net, I will ask her to just put it into my download
folder so I can then move it to the backup folder under my files.
Thanks.

Paul:

I believe you are entering the wrong locations, and that would cause a lot
of problems. Assuming your computers network name is paul, and you have two
shared folders you want to access named "music" and "my files", you would
use the following locations:
//paul/music
//paul/My Files

I believe a share name never contains slashes after the one that follows the
computer name. In other words, it doesn't matter where the folder is on the
PC, its the share name that matters.

Hi, Rob. Thanks for sending me something to try.
Here is what I did.
I deleted all of the tdb files. I think there were 12.
I connected wirelessly and went to the add a network folder prompt. I typed
in:
"//PAUL/Paul Henrichsen/music/"
I got an endless loop message; something about gen gate and either var lock
or var log. I couldn't tell and some numbers.
I tried it again after deleting all of the tdb files. This time I got
another number spevifying that I had entered an invalid share name.
I tried another folder:
"//PAUL/Paul Henrichsen/My Files/"
And got a completely different error number but the same invalid share name
prompt.
Hope this helps.

Paul:

Please try the following in an attempt to fix file shares with Vista:

1. Be sure wireless networking is off.
2. Open File Explorer on the Braille+.
3. Open the internal flash disk.
4. Open the var folder.
5. Open the lock folder.
6. Delete all of the files with an extension of .tdb. There are probably
10-15 of them.
7. Turn on wireless networking and connect to your access point.
8. Try accessing files on your Vista machine again.

I will, Larry and thanks.
