Chase,

I saw your post on the tech list, unfortunatly i have not subscribed to 
it from my current email so i could not answer over there. so I will 
answer your question here and give you an answer for that question as 
well.

a tgz file is a unix tar file that has been compressed with gzip. I have 
never tried to use the file manager to extract one on the icon, but from 
the console you would use the following command to extract it.

tar -zxvf foo.tgz, where foo.tgz is the file you wish to extract.

google for learning linux and you will come up with thousands of hits 
for learning what the console is all about.
