All,It is my opinion that three things need to occur going forward to clear the log jam and accelerate IBIS macro committee specification progress. I've placed them in my order of importance.
1. Existing issues with current AMI specification sections need to be resolved ASAP to enable developers develop models that are inter operable within multiple EDA platforms. 2. The current 5.0 AMI specification needs to be revised to accountfor original intention, existing implementations, and clarity. The revision will be identified as the established baseline
specification. 3. The existing 5.0 Parser and AMI specification are not in agreement, and must be brought into agreement through specification and parser changes. 4. Critical features/functions missing from the existing specification, that are needed for comprehensive channel modeling and/or required functionality, should be specified and added in a manner consistent with clarity, accuracy, and compatibility with the 5.0 spec. 5. "Nice to have" enhancements, that are not necessarily required for modeling fidelity or required functionality, need to be specified and added in a manner consistent with clarity, accuracy, and compatibility with the 5.0 spec. I'd propose the following process going forward to accomplish * A *"5.0 editorial-clarification Master BIRD" *that incorporates all necessary editorial and commentary clarifications of the intended meaning of the specification as embodied in the document and the IBIS 5.0 parser. o This BIRD shall contain only clarifications to the 5.0 specification. o Specific sections of the AMI specification will be identified for "targeted" sub-BIRDs for quick resolution of on-going identified implementation issues. + Note - A sub-BIRD is BIRD that, for the purposes of this committee is agreed to be incorporated into the full Master BIRD * Targeted sub-BIRDs shall, have highest priority in the committee, and be expedited through the ATM committee review process for quick introduction to the full IBIS forum for vote as a complete replacement for the specified section. o Targeted sub-BIRDs will be considered incorporated into the 5.0 editorial-clarification Master BIRD upon IBIS forum approval. * When complete, the Master BIRD, incorporating all approved sub-BIRDs by reference, along with all additional editorial changes, will be submitted to the IBIS forum for approval. o Approval of the Master BIRD takes second highest priority in the committee, as it establishes a working baseline for future enhancements. * Once Approved, the Master BIRD shall be considered to be the baseline IBIS AMI specification going forward. * Once Approved, all sub-BIRDs shall be considered to be a section of the baseline IBIS AMI specification going forward * Critical feature/function enhancement BIRDS shall be fully compatible with the 5.0 editorial-clarification Master Bird o Critical feature/function enhancement BIRDs take third highest priority in the committee. * Nice-to-have enhancements take forth highest priority in the committee, and must be fully compatible with the 5.0 editorial-clarification Master BirdIn order to expedite the specification approval process, all BIRDS should state:
* The problem being solved, including type (modeling, EDA interface, connectivity, comments for enhanced EDA usage ... etc.) * The rational for solving the problem using the proposed method vs. other methods considered. * A review of comparable methods currently in the specification that have been considered for the same function. * A review of compatibility with IBIS Version 5.0, and with the 5.0 editorial-clarification Master BIRD In summary: * Critical BIRDs to clarify current AMI specification are most important, and should be submitted as quickly as possible. * Master clarification BIRD will incorporate critical clarification BIRDs by reference along with other editorial changes. * Master 5.0 Bird will be the baseline specification for all enhancement BIRDS * Critical feature/function enhancement BIRDs can be developed concurrently, but will not be voted on by full forum until Master 5.0 BIRD has been approved. o However, if done correctly, this can easily be a follow-on vote in the same meeting, if the BIRD has met all compatibility criteria. * Nice-to-have enhancement BIRDS will be prioritized after what the committee agrees to be critical issues.* To facilitate the process, simplicity is better than complexity. BIRDS should encapsulate single issues and sections of the
specification, whenever possible. best regards, Scott -- Scott McMorrow Teraspeed Consulting Group LLC 121 North River Drive Narragansett, RI 02882 (401) 284-1827 Business (401) 284-1840 Fax http://www.teraspeed.com Teraspeed® is the registered service mark of Teraspeed Consulting Group LLC
