I wanted to find out the answer to the question we raised in the
last meeting about [External Model] ports. The question was
whether [External Model] was allowed to have user defined ports
so that an [External Circuit] could potentially be connected to
those.

I found this on page 108 of the v5.0 specification:

| Model units under [External Model] may only use reserved
| ports. The reserved, pre-defined port names are listed in the
| General Assumptions heading above. As noted earlier, digital
| and analog reserved port functions will be assumed by the tool
| and connections made accordingly. All the ports appropriate
| to the particular Model_type subparameter entry must be
| explicitly listed (see below). Note that the user may connect
| SPICE, Verilog-A(MS) and VHDL-A(MS) models to A_to_D and
| D_to_A converters using custom names for analog ports within
| the model unit, so long as the digital ports of the converters
| use the digital reserved port names.

The first sentence of this paragraph gives the answer to my question,
which is "NO". An [External Model] can only have the reserved ports,
except when there are A_to_D or _D_to_A converters involved, but even
then these converters must end up being connected to the digital
reserved nodes, which means that another [External Circuit] may not
be used to provide terminations to unused T-stone ports in [External
Model]s.

So if we want have a direct connect Touchstone S-parameter model in
an [External Model] (without an ISS wrapper), we have to provide all
termination definitions in the description of the [External Model]
keyword. This must include unused T-stone ports as well as the
ones which are connected to the terminals of the [External Model].

Thanks,

Arpad

Agenda
======

1) Opens
2) Call for any related patent disclosures
3) Review of ARs:

Arpad: Write a new revision of BIRD 117 and 118 to generalize
references to parameters in files (.ami or any)
        - in progress

Any other AR-s?

Old ARs:

Arpad: Review the documentation (annotation) in the macro libraries.
        - deferred until a demand arises or we have nothing else to do

4) New BIRD draft on Naming Rules (Walter)
    - comments, questions?

5) Analog BIRDs discussion

    - BIRD 117/118 revision to generalize parameter file references
      - no update (Arpad)

    - BIRD 144.2 Direct S-parameters under [External Model] (Cadence)
      - define boundary conditions for unused nodes
      - define boundary conditions for connected nodes
      - does [External Model] allow additional nodes?

    - BIRD 145 Cascading [Model] with [External Model] (Cadence)
      - questions, comments?

    - BIRD 116/144 related: need to decide what to do with the
isolation amplifier in the analog model boundary definition
      - do we need these if we spell out in the spec that:
        - Tx model is always driven by an ideal voltage source
          - i.e. zero output impedance
        - Rx model is always loaded by an ideal voltage source
          - i.e. infinite input impedance

    - BIRD 125 package modeling

    BIRD 122 (Walter)
    - working documents: ISS_Buffer_BIRD.doc (May 17, 2011)
                         ISS_Package_BIRD_RevA.doc (May 27, 2011)

6) BIRD 121.1, data management parameters (file support) (Walter)
    - questions, comments?

7) BIRD 150, dependency table (Walter)
    - questions, comments?

8) Info, Out, InOut BIRD (Arpad)
    - latest wording includes "in order to be compliant with this
      specification, Model_Specific parameters ... must not ...",
and omits the word "simulation" so it's meaning doesn't have
      to be defined
    - any comments, questions on this draft?

Thanks,

Arpad
