Good questions...
Regarding your first one, the point of that slide is not so much the power
awareness of that package
model, i.e. whether it includes the power pins/pads or not. The point is about
referencing. Even if
I only included the signal pins/pads on that drawing (i.e. made it
non-power-aware), there is a possibility
that the model maker might use a reference connection for it that is different
from A_gnd (for whatever
reason). In that case the simulator will not be able to determine what the
voltage is on the signal
terminal of the W-element (or S-parameter block) on the buffer side, because
the BIRD158 model's
reference is not common with the W-element (or S-parameter) reference. This
could happen
easily even if the model is not intended to be power aware.
Interestingly, this situation could still arise, even if we define A_gnd as
global reference (Node 0).
This is why I was asking the question in these discussions a few weeks ago
whether should allow
the use of arbitrary references in the [Interconnect Model] keyword. If we
mandated that all
package and on-die interconnect models are global reference (Node 0)
referenced, than we
would not have the possibility for such model maker errors.
On the second question, you are correct that BIRD158 only describes
differential buffers, and
DDR5 is single ended, but that doesn't mean that someone will not come up with
a single ended
version of BIRD158 to address that situation too. (Although to make it
power-aware, the
S-parameter block of the buffer model should really include the Vdd and Vss
terminals also).

I can see how the problem case on your last slide is a problem, but who is
trying to do this in practice? Is there someone doing power-aware simulations
with IBIS-AMI models for SerDes applications?
For DDR5, with IBIS-AMI as an option, there is interest in capturing
power-aware effects in the channel characterization process. However, BIRD158
is not applicable for single-ended DDR5 signaling applications, is it?

It might help, but that will also depend on what the decision is about A_gnd...
Like I said in the meeting, Walter's suggestion in the meeting to define A_gnd
as
a global reference (similar to Node 0) would work, but in Vladimir's (and my)
opinion it would be too restrictive.
So it seems that the question now shifted from whether A_gnd is a [Component]
or [Model] level local reference to whether it is a global or local reference.
So what should A_gnd be defined as:
global reference
local reference
if local:
[Component] level or
[Model] level

I fixed my slides and checked with Walter off line, and he agreed that the

I made is god now. In addition to that, I revised the slides so that the text

Interconnect model sets Set3 and Set4 use A_gnd. In the models in Set3, each

Randy, MM,
We all know (at least by inference) that both Intel and Micron do Power Aware
Analysis on their components. (Notice I use the word Analysis which could be
Simulation or any of a number of other techniques reported in the literature.)
We also know that Micron delivers Power Aware IBIS files. At least one FPGA
company also supplies Power Aware IBIS files.
Can either Randy or MM state that the current BIRD 189 syntax allow EDA tools
to build Power Aware simulations for IBIS Power Aware [Models]?
* Brad has told me that the BIRD 189 syntax can represent Power Aware
package models that work correctly in his simulator, although they require that
other Interconnect Models in the channel need to follow certain rules (e.g.
never using Node 0).
Can either Randy or MM state that when using Power Aware on-die or package
models if they:
1. Use a single "reference node", or if the reference nodes are distributed?
2. If a single "reference node" is it Node 0, or the signal name at the pins?
3. If the reference node is not Node 0, then do they require or Board
interconnect to not allow Node 0.
