Hi Martha
This is so interesting! I can certainly help with the French and
rhythms/inflections analysis side. I am fine and just getting used to life
'inside'. Hope you are ok - strange times.
Take care
Sue

Dear all,
Is there among our group any French speaker interested in musical prosody?

My research has led me to study some of the late 19th century popular songs
that were recorded in the early 20th century.

There is very little left of this material, especially because of the fragility
of the discs.

I came across a very interesting piece -- a Brazilian version of Frou-frou
recorded in 1902!

The chanson Frou-frou was composed in 1897 for the revue Paris qui marche (

There is a score, and several more recent versions on the internet.

The Brazilian track is in bad condition in terms of timbre, as so many female
recordings of the time, but one can still get a good sense of the microrhythm.

It would be fun to research the topic of the language rhythmic impact, in this
case comparing the French and the Portuguese versions. Anyone there?

Cheers, and hoping everyone is at home preventing the Covid-19 spreading...
