No. That magical barrier is not able to be effected by any spell. It is part
of the protection for the testing mage. It is a sharp mind to think of that
however, grin.

I get a stack trace, rather than a bit of text describing what
happened, and the barrier doesn't fizzle. Is that supposed to happen?

Hmm,
How do I take it from the chest though? I did disable it and pick the
lock, but couldn't figure out what else to do with it to actually get
its contents. I can't move to its space, can only go to adjacent
spaces, can't take it ...is there an open command I am missing? :)

There's a mage key in the chest that the dog is guarding. Pick the lock
on
the chest, disable the device, get the key, I don't use the key to unlock
the door. Though, doing that basically just give you access to
information.
Use the key to unlock the door. Also, spider, the cat is evil.

various small keys but get by using a lockpick most of the time,
picked up the cat who just seems to follow me around everywhere and

However, at that point I get stuck. The lockpick won't open the doors,
neither will the small keys. Hammering it with the sowrd does nothing
and disable device doesn't do much either. Am I missing something or
