I'm pretty sure I've brought up the straight line thing in the
past...I don't remember what the consensus was though, if any.

The distance thing definitely makes sense!

And the tier thing...well, that also makes sense. That miiiight be
able to be done through script, but if it's doable that way then it's
beyond my current capabilities unless I almost totally copy off of
other people.

My first thought was , for lack of a better name, a splash_line.
Essentially this would do damage along the path from the attacker to the
target. Thus all in the splash line would get hit for normal or splash
damage etc.
This might not work that great with attacks that aren't straight lines,
except perhaps adding straight diagonal lines as well as horizontal and
vertical. Or maybe it just takes lot ofcomplicated math, shrug. An
example
of ths effect could be a laser burning a hole thr a bunch of targets, or
a
penetrating lightning bolt spell that can hit a line of characters at the
same time. For example a type 1 phaser in Starfleet battles does its best
damage 5 spaces away, where a closer or farther hit does progressively
less. Another example could be an arrow that when shot for extreme long
range might do less damage then it would do on a much closer target.

Along the same lines could be tiersof splash range damage. For instance a
fireball could explode doing 12 points to the main target, 6 to those in
the
splash range, and 3 to those in yet another tier of damage compared to
distance. Granted this last idea seems not worth the effort. Still
thought
I would mention it.

Anyway, just some thoughts.
