how about a different kind of borg invasion. the story is this, short...
It is 100 years later. the federation has a colony on a small planet at the edge of the alpha quadrant bordering the delta quadrant. They also have a space station which keeps open an artificial wormhole into fluidic space because they have recently made full allies and species 8-4-7-2 is about to enter the federation and has agreed to lend help if the station or colony is threatened. The colony has been at peace for two years now, but recently one of their scout ships on a mission to bring back more deuterium for the station has gone missing. A shuttle was sent to investigate and found some borg debris along with the wreckage of the shuttle. Now that the borg knows the federation has allied itself with species 8-4-7-2, they are coming to conquer the colony, its protective station and then the alpha quadrant! First you have to fight several borg spheres in heavily armed defiant-class shuttles. Once those are defeated, you have to bord the cube with a mixture of armed star fleet security and help from species 8-4-7-2 fight your way past the borg and retrieve an important piece of federation technology. Some of your crew may be assimilated along the way, eventually you'd have to avoid them also. not sure if this would be too complex for tacticle battles currently though. disable the central plexus hope I got that right that thing at the center of the cube that connects it to all the rest of the collective, retrieve the technology. Once you get in your shuttle and escape breaching the cube and destroying it with a final phaser fire that map ends. how about a borg invasion map pack like that?

The thing is, the borg's greatest strength in storytelling is that they
assimulate people. Assimulating a ship can only go so far. But assimulating
a crew goes a long way towards the flow of the story and the need to really
feel a personal investment in kicking borg butt.

Just take for example star trek first contact. The space battle was fun, but
it was the freaky way Picard and other crewmembers had to walk among the
borg drones that really gets the heart pumping. I saw that when I was still
sighted and man, that was a memorable moment to me.

I tried using persons and time travel in an earlier version of starship
battles, but they got cut because no one seemed to like them. The problem
is, I would want to use them in a borg invasion to get that first contact
feel, you know?

So that is why it kind of didn't raise up on my list of map pack creations.
I know, more information then you really needed, lol.

a borg invasion would be so cool!

Hi Niklas,
The asteroid is mainly there as a marker for navigation. I figured
that it could be something that a person could recognize as the middle of
the map.
It doesn't really do anything else.

The aura sing are a made up race that has a special weapon. It is an
energy ball that does damage to units , even if it just passes them by
within one square of it. It then can explode on the target as well. I
was originally going to include them in a second starship battles map
dealing with a borg invasion, but then all sorts of things cropped up,
I got started with starcraft and never got around to it.

I hope that helped you out.

Hi Al,

thank you for the explanation. BTW: the weapon wich works like a time
bomb i meant was the energy sphear or so, i don't know how to write
it. And another thing wich isn't clear to me is the asteroid. It's
called a unit but how does it work and what can be done with it?

Thank you.

best regards
Niklas

Hi Niklas,
I figured it out, and yeah, it is something I should have explained
in a guide, because it can be confuseing.

You see, on the ships there is a list of skills.
But because the computer could not use items, I turned the items list
into a second group of skills that are actually considered items. The
point was to allow players to use these higher functions, but deny
them to
the computer.
The problem is that these are not meant to be items. They are meant
to be actual commands that you can use to help your ship. Some items
are used for how well you regenerate warp energy, and how much your
people will do damage control each round. I think those kind of
things are in the starship battles primary map pack.

So what you did was use the transporter to transport out the self
destruct command, which actually doesn't do anything on a map, but
just causes your own ship to self destruct.

The three different transporter modes are:

Transporter: This is used to transport items from ship to ship. These
items are meant to be away teams, or special items designated in the
map's description as something to be acquired or transported.

The beam in actually "picks up items" from the map. So that is what
it is, it beams items off the map into the ship.
Beam out is the opposite, it beams items out of the ship and onto the
map.
I know that can be kind of confuseing and I am sorry I did not
explain that very well in a guide. I promise I will try to get one
put out. I will be gone for a week but hopefully I will be able to
make a good one
after that.
I hope that helps you out, and I am glad you mentioned it, cause it
never occurred to me that that could happen. So good job!

Hi Al,

from what i remember, the Item was there even if the ship wasn't
destroyed, just moved away from the tile with the item. The item
sounded like the communicator in star trek, i think.

Hi Niklas,
When it comes to age of warlords, anything is possible. Generally
speaking, it is finished, except for the polishing up of details,
which I didn't realize how much I needed to get done.
I am also open to suggestions and ideas from players, if they think
there is a way to make a map better, or if they want a different
kind of battle scenario. I tried to create those dual of destiny
maps so that people could set up their ownbattles cause it is hard
to cover
everything.
I think you are talking about transporter bombs. The orion syndicate
uses transporter bombs like torpedos. If an actual item was outside
of the ship, then I am not sure how that happened. Did the item
get left over when a ship was destroyed?

It sounds like you had a heck of a fight! Better luck next time.

As a side note, I always wanted to combine the two map packs cause
starship template was just something I used to help me test and
create maps and duels etc, and I thought others might be interested
in
it.
But I guess it gets played.

Hi Allan,

yes, to be more detailed would be very good. But keep it up, your
work is very fantastic man. It's great to see you are working on the
user guides already, so the map packs will get it in an update.
Great, thank you for all this especially for doing it without costs,
i have to say, if it would cost money, i would pay it for all the
hard work you put into it. Just out of curiousity, do you plan to
add more maps and content to age of warlords or is it finnished as
it is now? It's very
gigantic already.
Ah, and another thing, in the user guides, please explain how items
in your maps work if they work in another way as the general. I had
in starship templates a ship standing on a tile with an item but i
don't know how to use or what to do with it. If i moved the ship
away from the tile, the item was still there. But i don't know what
it
was.
Oh well, the AI was very angry about me. I placed a weapon onto a
tile with an enemy ship, i don't know the exact name of the weapon,
but I think it worked like a time bomb or such. However, at the
enemies turn the ship with my surprise on it explodes. I was soooooo
sad about it, i had cryed if I hadn't laughed. Hmmm, pitti for the
enemy. But his refenge was bloddy brutal. In his next turn, he shot
down 5 of my shuttles and a cruiser. I had a fleed of 9 ships, 3
cruisers and
6 shuttles. in the next turn the nightmare goes on, because this
freec destroyed another cruiser and my last shuttle. However, he won
at the end, but I fought like an heroe till dead, yeah.

best regards
Niklas

Hi Niklas,
Ok, thanks for letting me know about that need.
I actually got a good chunk of the age of warlords user guide done.
It made me realize that I need to go thru all the skills and make
sure they are described better, sigh. I really should be more
detailed with everything, but there is always something going on, lol.

Hi Allan,

a thing wich should be included in the little user guide for
starship battles template is how the missile pods work and how they
can be used from the player for example. It was a thing i don't
understand and does need clarification in the user guide since it
hasn't been explained in the other starship map packs user guide as
well.
Thanks.

best regards
Niklas
