I did make it eventually. It was just that I had to account for the
crocodiles coming for me if I was on the bank, so I had to have one tile
between me and the river to be absolutely safe. Moving along the river
at that distance cost movement and then I'd find a coin and only have
two movement left, so couldn't get it that round unless I wanted to be
stranded in the water. And then I couldn't cross the river if I wanted
to because it's five spaces wide so I'd be stranded in the middle of the
stream. And there tended to be an awful lot of crocodiles...

You don't need to finish the river one unles you got the first
version, which has 4 games.
