i3 strives to implement tiling well, and recommends not using floating
windows for more than the occasional password prompt (e.g. from gpg-agent).
If the applications you’re using don’t do well with tiling, i3’s point of
view is that the application should be improved. I realize that this is
often easier said than done, but I also believe that adapting to output
size and density are virtues most applications should have.
If there’s no interest from the application provider to make their
application more useful in a tiling window manager scenario, then maybe the
answer is that i3 just isn’t a good fit for what you’re trying to do.
I realize that this might not be the most satisfying answer for your
immediate situation and for that I apologize.

And Xtide, when executed, may be given a class category, but there will be

These applications default to small windows, so the usual i3 paradigm (I
mean, tiles) is not idea. I like scratchpads alot, and I have implemented
a few, including Orage as a scratchpad recalled by a single binding from a
scratchpad state. Dropdown terminals have been implemented for i3; I have
tried this approach and it's great!
Both of XEphem and Xtide would help me best if available as popups as
well. Grouping, if one will, would be useful. Implementations of simliar
concepts have seemed convoluted. I am not a programmer, of course.
Is there any help? I'm liking i3 alot; the ability to keep windows
together is one of several unsolved problems for me on my quest to making
this more useful. Then I will be able to edit the conky as Manjaro's
communitiy i3 edition as a reminder of yet another keystroke or keystrokes.
