Here in NC we have had 2 adult male RTHUs killed by adult male Northern
Cardinal(s) and one by an adult male Summer Tanager. It was some years
ago (would have to dig for the records) now and the two hummingbirds
grabbed by Cardinal(s) were in the same yard (same male involved?). My
educated guess in those cases was that the hummers were agitated by
these bigger red birds in their territories-- and that maybe the
songbirds were aggravated by the hummers buzzing close to their faces.
Very curious--- regardless...
