Subject: [humband] Louisiana Winter Hummingbird Notes 2016-2017
Inspired by Fred Bassett's keen accounting of the 2016-2017 winter season, I
compiled a similar analysis for the area of southeastern Louisiana that
Steve Locke and I cover - New Orleans area, Baton Rouge area, the River
Parishes on both banks of the Mississippi River, Houma, Thibodaux, and a
single site in Covington.
Over the course of the winter, Steve Locke and I along with trainee Erik
Johnson and with assistance from Tom Trenchard and Kevin Morgan, banded 146
new birds of 8 species and we documented 39 returnees of 5 species, a few
from the prolific 2011-2012 season.
It was a challenging season to say the least. Hummingbird numbers were low
or non-existent at quite a few usually productive sites. I out of town half
of October and half of November, but also I was ill from mid December
onward. I am still not back to full functionality though my doctor promises
that I will be "as good as new" - eventually.
In my absence, Steve picked up the ball and ran with it. Without his hard
work, the season would have been a total bust. Because of limitations on
Locke's available time, we were not able to reach all of our sites. This
was not our poorest season, but it pales beside so many stellar seasons.
Here is the accounting:
Ruby-throated Hummingbird 50 [+ 6 returnees]
Rufous Hummingbird 39 [+24 returnees]
Black-chinned Hummingbird 24 [+ 4 returnees]
Buff-bellied Hummingbird 20 [+ 3 returnees]
Calliope Hummingbird 6 [+ 2 returnees]
Broad-billed Hummingbird 4
Allen's Hummingbird 2
Broad-tailed Hummingbird 1
Total = 146 [+ 39 returnees]
This is the second consecutive season that Ruby-throateds have scored as the
most abundant species, an honor that has been held by Rufous since this
"5-year" project was initiated in 1979.
As a point of comparison, abbreviated summaries of each season since
1999-2000. Seasons prior to 1999 are omitted because our reach was much
more limited before email and the internet introduced us to many ardent
hummingbirders that we might never have met otherwise.
1999-2000 - 170 newly banded with 3 returnees.
2000-2001 - 369 newly banded with 23 returnees.
2001-2002 - 385 newly banded with 20 returnees.
2002-2003 - 375 newly banded with 73 returnees.
2003-2004 - 314 newly banded with 82 returnees.
2004-2005 - 217 newly banded with 104 returnees.
2005-2006 - 181 newly banded with 60 returnees.
2006-2007 - 292 newly banded with 73 returnees.
2007-2008 - 185 newly banded with 56 returnees.
2008-2009 - 144 newly banded with 48 returnees.
2009-2010 - 157 newly banded with 57 returnees.
2010-2011 - 179 newly banded with 72 returnees.
2011-2012 - 583 newly banded with 91 returnees.
2012-2013 - 441 newly banded with 85 returnees.
2013-2014 - 316 newly banded with 121 returnees.
2014-2015 - 155 newly banded with 76 returnees.
2015-2016 - 142 newly banded with 35 returnees.
2016-2017 - 146 newly banded with 39 returnees.
