I had an old Ohaus scale that I inherited from the songbird bander who
trained me on those species. It was very durable, and lasted more than 20
years (with a couple of fixes of loose wires). The newer scales I'm using
now, including smaller ones for hummingbirds, are much more economical, but
they seem to have a characteristic that my older scale did not. The newer
scales can be affected by the proximity of a cell phone. I found this out
when I went to the FAQ page of a scale manufacturer to find out why my
scale, sitting on my kitchen counter and out of the wind, was slowly
"counting" up from the tared value of zero, gradually up over 7.0 grams!
So, I put the cell phone in the other room, and the problem went away.

I also just talked to a technical rep with Ohaus who said the displays
can't really be fixed, at least economically ... just another piece of
'throwaway" equipment that we have all gotten way too used to and numb to I
guess ......

My advice: don't bother with it. Excellent small digital scales are under
$25 now. Here's the current version of a My Weigh scale I bought from
this company many years ago to weigh hummers:

This instrument has more capacity and better resolution than your Ohaus. I
liked mine so much, I bought a second one as a backup. Even if you prefer
the Ohaus, it's good to take a spare into the field. BTW, mine is very easy
on batteries.
