Subject: [heraldnegindex] Negative archive Dear All, Thanks to Rosemary’s help
we had a very successful search in the museum store this morning. We got
thoroughly filthy searching, moving and opening boxes and ring binders but the
success rate was 100% which I think is a first. However we actually achieved
more than 100% I believe because just as we were packing up to leave we
discovered an open box of somewhere between 200 and 300 glass plate negatives,
each one labelled and numbered in their glassine sleeves but from a variety of
dates from about 1947 through to 1959. These appear to include a number of
those that we have found to be missing from the boxes they should have been in
during earlier searches. It would appear that somebody had accessed these
images over the years but had then failed to return them to their correct in
sequence places! (I have an idea I might know who was responsible too.) As a
result I called in and saw Josh Godfrey at the museum with the good news. I now
have his permission for a small group of us (I would think four would be
sensible) to visit the store with a view to sorting the miss placed negatives
into chronological order and return them to their correct boxes. We can use the
table in the open area of the store for this – we don’t have to do the sorting
in the cramped confines of the roller racking. So the big question… Who is
interested in joining in? This is not going to be done anytime soon and there
is no rush but if you could let me know if you are interested in joining in
then we’ll sort out a mutually convenient date. Just to whet your appetites,
among them is the sequence of photographs of the prototype hovercraft passing
through Farnham on its way to the Farnborough air show. I think many of the
others are also of important events that many people will be interested in so
getting them back in place is going to prove extremely valuable. I think it
will be a good idea to wear latex or similar gloves avoid the worst of the dust
though! More good news – I heard today that in order to facilitate the
inventory of the bound copies at the Herald they are all being moved from the
very hot and dusty cellar to the first floor of the building where there are
plenty of worktops, natural light and an equable temperature which will make
that job and future searches much more comfortable. Things are moving,Chris
