I’m replying on the list because this is of interest to Keith too.
The story of the RLLM barrel organ came up in Peeps the other day and a reader
has done quite a bit of research into its earlier history.
It seems there is a Liphook connection with arguing/warring Italian organ
grinders. See the attached article with a bit more detail about biting noses
and stabbings!
I wondered if, when things are a little better, if you’d be interested in
enquiring to see if the Liphook Millennium Centre has anything about barrel
organs and Italians in the area at that time?
Keith is not sure if this is the correct Italian/s so it would be interesting
to see if they have records of any others. Apparently there was another
altercation involving an Italian with a barrel organ in Petersfield around the
same time so it seems they may have been quite common visitors to the area.
