Good job! We had a Merlin at Briery on Saturday while canoeing with the
Dennisons and Fehrers and Woodruffs. It just sat on a dead snag. I need to
get it into eBird.

the way home from Holliday Lake State Park this evening, I flushed a flock of
sparrows from the edge of the road with my car in the Appomattox-Buckingham
State Forest. They were foraging along the edge of a large clear-cut caused by
the Evergreen tornado earlier this year in late February. One of the sparrows
caught my eye because it was brown a with white-edged tail. I pulled over and
saw the VESPER SPARROW fly again into an oak tree. After a short look-around,
also finding a PALM WARBLER and a COMMON RAVEN, I continued down the road.

I got to Sandy River Reservoir in Prince Edward about 30 minutes later for some
duck-watching and again a brown sparrow with a white-edged tail flushed from
the edge of the lake with some DARK-EYED JUNCOS. I came back to the spot a few
minutes later to see another VESPER SPARROW on the ground near the water. Only
WOOD DUCKS, WILD TURKEYS, and a WILSON'S SNIPE this evening.

This is a very good bird for central Virginia, but two in half an hour is
amazing. Keep an eye out for more sparrows on the move!
