I might not have followed recent threads very well, but wouldn't it
make much more sense to start implementing/porting drivers that have
someone that can test the implementation? Preferably someone that has
some knowledge of development?

It rather bothers me that the names are completely inscrutable and
cryptic. It's not like they were developed on a system that only
supported 8.3 (or less?) filenames, right?

Yes, it's quite shocking, isn't it. But who knows... maybe there is some such restriction on some of the platforms that at least one of the BSDs runs on.
