... so that went alright but the build still fails with:

The "You are not currently on a branch." means that you have *not* checked out the master branch. You did probably check out a specific revision (by tag or commit hash) in the past and haven't switched back to master afterward. Use "git checkout master". Then you can pull again to update that checked out branch.
