For the desktop means the focus is not on server or mobile or embedded
side, but what used to be called the "home computer".
that works in contrast to linux and bsd, where the desktop was just
sort of incidental and everything's server/client but there's gotta be
some further positioning. windows and mac os are the operating systems
for the desktop. be was "the media os" and osx was "it just works" and
windows was the elephant in the room nobody could avoid.
haiku inherited the design of some excellent media handling that's
since been mimicked in linux-based broadcast television workflows in
sweden and the uk and in the design of final cut pro x but there's
still no good way to put media in from the world except from another
filesystem (and thanks so much for that) although work is ongoing.
folks have shied away from calling this a media os but there's so much
extra work in other operating systems to get a media pipeline set up
that haiku has natively. that's where i'd put it, especially
considering how big streaming has gotten and is getting (and that we
are rolled out in at least one professional broadcast package).
maybe there are other things it's uniquely suited for? "the responsive
os" "the sweet tiles os" "the easy to read os" "hey" sky's the limit.
