There was an explaination in BeOS R5's release notes to the Storage
kit, as I learned from an older post by Ingo. I digged up my old CD and
put it on pastebin [1] (hoping that "paste expiration: never" does what
it promises...).
Even better is darkwyrm's "Programming with Haiku" series. Lesson 15
"Making a New File Type" [2] deals with sniffer rules.
