I like this idea too, especially if I can drop in whatever editor.
It could be as simple as a preference, choosing one of
the apps listing support for the image/* supertype.

This would be perfect, IMO.
[Alt|Ctrl]+E and just edit away..
Different editors catering to the special needs of various
user groups: web, casual photography, print publishing, ..
People who want to alternate between different editors
could have their preference set to "Ask", having ShowImage
ask you each time, which application you want.
Offering Tracker-addon-like editor shortcuts would be
a little over the top, I imagine.
