How do propose that these icons work?
What information would they present,
and what interaction would they allow?

(say, the Realtek 8139 NIC, or the serial port)

Your hardware is already accesible to users via
the C++ API and the system servers,
running on top of the services provided by the kernel.

I'd much rather use SoundPlay, etc, than pipe
raw audio to an audio chip device file.
