How would Jam know when an optional package was updated on
haiku-files.org? In other words how would it get the date modified of
the latest files online to compare them to the downloaded ones? That
is probably the general problem here.
I imagine it is possible to work around this in some way, because I
agree with your premise that it would be nice not to have these file
names changing all the time. But since the optional packages are
really a temporary solution for lack of a proper package manager
(which Ingo seems to be working on now), it probably is not worth it
to spend much more time improving how the optional packages work.
