I think this may be related to what I'm seeing with my non-laptop.
Try either of the following, if possible, and tell me what happens.
(shutdown and reboot as necessary)
Connect a USB keyboard, reboot if necessary to make it work.
Type "keymap -r" and see if the laptop keyboard starts working.
Connect a PS2 mouse and reboot.
