From an artists viewpoint, there is simply only so many ways to present an
image.
The iconfactory has the best icon-artists in the business. You will find
that their icons too, look pretty much the same as anyone elses in 2006.
In todays world there is simply no limitation to what can be done in pixel
space as far as 2d art is concerned--and as such, we have reached the apex
of icon art with Mac OS X's icons. (see iconfactory)
I'm not sure how an artist can bring innovation to something that hasn't
changed in 1000 years (2d colour art).
Hi peeps, I would like to submit the Neu icon set from Silvestre Herrera, check itouthttp://www.silvestre.com.ar/wp-content/uploaded/Neu-0.6-PR3.tar.bz2
They would need to be formatted to contest specifications (there are SVG files in the archive). I can possibly do it this weekend if somebody else doesn't do it. License is GNU GPL v2, this is compatible right?
Generally, we try to avoid GPL wherever possible.
Also on that note, for a set like this we should probably be noting the license type and providing a link to the license itself.
Agreed.
I would like to comment, too, on the icons currently in the contest. Personally (and I told Stippi this when I had only seen his iconset), I would like to see something radically different. I just don't know what it is. When BeOS first came out, everyone had ugly, flat icons. Be's 3d effect was a different, interesting effect and the way all of the icons were designed in the same style made for a cohesive style that gave the OS a particular look.
Everybody's icons, again today, look pretty much the same. I would like to see something that is as innovative today as Be's were back in 96. Everyone right now is using bright colors, gradient shading, cartoon style. I can't draw to save my life, but I think that something that stood out because it was distinctive and interesting would be worthwhile.
