I'm actually quite confident about the future of Haiku, but not because
of GE. I'm sure the core developers have their own lists about what
they want to see in the future, possibly with some ideas drawn from GE.
That's the way I think it should be - people who intimately know the
system be responsible for deciding the direction (to ensure
consistency), but bearing in mind ideas of others. Hence why I said a
firm hand on the tree would be required post R1. An OS designed simply
by anybody being allowed to include anything they think is cool is not
an OS I would want to use.
Haiku, as a project, including GE as its open-air conceptual hothouse,
seems to be clearing a new garden path midway between the cathedral and
the bazaar, in just the way that you describe. It's a fascinating,
pioneering model of community-based software development, and has great
propects for success, I think.
IMHO, Haiku is in safe hands.
I feel the same way, for what it's worth. The Haiku development teams
are just plain fabulous. I'm happy to have found a place where I can
associate myself, if only peripherally, with such a smart and friendly
group of people. I just keep trying to find creative ways to contribute
where I can in support of their work.
Sorry if I offended anyone and for sparking off such an impassioned
discussion; neither were intended.
I've always found passion to be a reassuring sign of vitality. :-)
Anyone who has been around for even a short time, Simon, would have to
recognize your good judgment and sense your goodwill.
