Ah, I had tried pop.gmail.com before and that resolves to a different IP
address. But pop.googlemail.com works for me, too, just asked for
confirmation about the different certificate.
Have you selected 'TLS' in the account prefs (in the "Encryption & Security"
groupbox at the bottom)?
