This whole thread completely ignores a 'recent' approach to application and
package management, which IMHO completely leapfrogs the 'old' methods used
on conventional desktops.


IMHO, users want a portal which ALSO allows them to purchase commercial
apps, shows a ranking system, has the facility to leave application
feedback, etc...  And while you're at it, also allow users to chat, share
non-commercial files, etc.

I know, this is a Glass Elevator thing, but it completely blows the existing
package management systems out of the water.  It hasn't been done yet (Steam
doesn't allow feedback and doesn't host free stuff).  Apple's AppStore is
the closest thing we have.
