I've read that I-B-M => H-A-L story many times, but somewhere I read (can't remember where) either Kubrick or Arthur C. Clark denying that this is where "HAL" came from. In the book I think it's supposed to stand for "heuristic-algorithmic-(something)". Quoting DaniTDI@xxxxxxxxxx: > HAL's name was intentional, Kubrik was refering to IBM with it, in a way > of how computer might, in the future (at the time) control our lifes. > HAL--> IBM.. clever guy that Kubrik uh? :) > > DaaT > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: "openbeos-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx" <openbeos-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> on > behalf of "arougthopher" <beos@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> > Sent: Friday, October 25, 2002 1:28 PM > To: "openbeos@xxxxxxxxxxxxx" <openbeos@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> > Subject: [openbeos] Re: Christianing party > > >> IBM - does it get more boring than this? > > > > It's actually one-upping National Cash Register, the company Tom > Watson > > worked for before he started IBM: National->International, > Cash->Business, > > Register->Machines.
