Announcement: WalterCon 2005

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada
Venue: Boardwalk Hotel and Casino
Dates: Saturday, 6 August 2005 and Sunday, 7 August 2005

WalterCon 2005, the second annual North American conference for Haiku developers, users, and enthusiasts -- as well as all computer technology thrill-seekers and avant-gardists -- will be taking place Saturday, August 6, and Sunday, August 7, 2005 at the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino right in the middle of the renowned "Strip" in luminescent Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

All persons who have previously indicated (via email to waltercon -- at -- haiku-os -- dot -- org) their intention to attend will be receiving an email within a day or so from now confirming guest accomodations (room assignments and nights), roommates (if any), and payment details.

Like last year, attendees this year will simply pay Haiku Inc. for the conference and guest room charges; Haiku Inc. will then pay the hotel in a lump sum on behalf of all attendees. In order to minimize the possibility of unintentional underpayment or overpayment of fees by attendees, and the consequent hassle of account adjustment, we ask that you refrain from sending funds until you have received an email from Czeslaw Czapla or Michael Phipps specifying a payment amount. (And then you should pay immediately! :) ) When you receive your bill by email, you will be directed therein to pay via PayPal through the Donate page of the Haiku website (http://haiku-os.org/contribute.php?mode=donate). Haiku Inc. will *not* request that you send funds in any other way than this.

If you would like to attend but have not already "preregistered" (as described above), please do not delay. We have negotiated reduced rates for guest room accomodations for the conference, but are required by the terms of our contract to submit a finalized rooming list to the hotel administration no later than July 5.

To sign up (only if you have not already done so), please send an email to waltercon -- at -- haiku-os -- dot -- org with the following details:
1. The name of each person in your party;
2. An email address for each person;
3. For each person, indicate whether he or she will be attending the conference (or, say, merely hitting the slot machines or the sauna);
4. For each person, indicate whether single or double guest room accomodations are desired, and for which night or nights (August 5, August 6, and/or August 7). (More on this below....)
5. For each conference attendee, please indicate t-shirt size. :)

Here is the final schedule of fees for WalterCon 2005:

Conference Registration: $35 per person

Guest Room Accomodations:

Friday, 5 August 2005
Double occupancy: $75 per person
Single occupancy: $150 per person (1 person)

Saturday, 6 August 2005
Double occupancy: $75 per person
Single occupancy: $150 per person (1 person)

Sunday, 7 August 2005
Double occupancy: $40 per person
Single occupancy: $80 per person (1 person)

The following incidental expenses are not included in this schedule of fees: meals; travel to and from Las Vegas; travel between the airport and the hotel; tips and gratuities.

Here is an off-the-cuff interpretation of the fee schedule: A "typical" individual would likely opt for the conference registration ($35), plus a double-occupancy room for Saturday night only ($75); thus, the total cost would be $110 for such a person (which was our original estimate a few months back). If a conference attendee is accompanied by, say, a significant other who has no interest in the conference itself, then the significant other would only need to pony up for the guest room charges, and not the conference registration fee. If anyone prefers to have a room to himself or herself, he or she would opt for the single occupancy option. If anyone likes the idea of making a mini-vacation of it, he or she could opt for guest room accomodations for Friday night or Sunday night, or both, in addition to the "usual" Saturday night stay. If anyone happens to live in or near Las Vegas, and has no need for a guest room at the hotel, he or she could opt to pay only for the conference registration. Etc. etc.

So there you have it (with apologies for verbosity)! We hope to see YOU there! :)
