This will take a while, so for now I will send you and Serpentor what I have.

You may also want to try to get Niels' version of the theme for Drupal
5, as when I tried it, it looked like it could have less issues than
the one we are using in NORCAL-HUG.

With regards to the modules, for the front page you will need this:

http://drupal.org/project/front

I also thought it would be a good idea to have a common navigation
means that ties all HUG sites to the various Haiku websites
(haiku-os.org, haiku-files.org, Trac, etc.). This would give a
stronger sense of unity between the HUGs and the project. For this, I
have been experimenting with the SimpleMenu module:

http://drupal.org/project/simplemenu

I enabled the module on norcal-hug.org so that you can see what I
mean. The menu can be themed and the menu entries fully customized, so
consider what you see now WIP.

In addition to the above, it may be interesting to consider using
shared sign-on:

http://drupal.org/project/singlesignon

This would allow to share the user base, and potentially user maps
(using Google maps).
