Indeed, I was going to recommend that as well...

Does anyone here have experience with setting up a secondary DNS?

Well, I've done it before, but the easiest way is to set it up with
zone transfer from your primary (when it's functioning), so that it's
always in sync. I'm not very good at setting up BIND, but I've written
zone files in the past using online guides.

I can lend dns/bind support if needed. Managed an *extremely* large dns resolver
cluster at a previous job (a major dedicated server provider).
