Hi Justin,
Pootle has quite an active community and I'm sure they would
appreciate if you give them feedback on what was confusing (in
particular) and how do you think it could be improved.
Your experience as a "virgin" Pootle user is unique because on first
contact you see things that developers and regular users have already
accepted and don't see them as a problem anymore. That puts you in a
great position to suggest improvements now, before you, too, will
accept things as they are.
