If both are provided, the .zip is usually a Windows version, i.e. containing 
files with DOS line breaks. That would also fit the error message.

Not yet. But you have these options:

* Copy the file to the image (via AddFilesToHaikuImage) and unzip it under 
Haiku.

* Unzip it on your build platform and copy the unzipped directory to the image 
(via CopyDirectoryToHaikuImage).

* If you want to put it on the image only once, you can as well use the 
bfs_shell, i.e. "jam -q @vmware mount" (assuming @vmware is the build profile 
you're using) and "cp :path/to/file myfs/path/to/target".

For the first two options I recommend a to have a look at 
build/jam/UserBuildConfig.ReadMe.
